Dr. Wu got his PhD degree on bioinformatics from James D. Watson Institute of Genome Sciences, Zhejiang University in 2012. His research at that time was mainly focused on bacterial compositional and functional adaptions from acquatic to terrestrial environment by using metagenomics, phylogenetics, and comparative genomics methods. He has shifted his major interest to human gut microbes and their interactions with the host ever since he joined Fredrik Bäckhed’s lab in 2015. By integrating different layers of multi-omics datasets, he is now trying to help build more systematic perspectives on pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders with relation to aberrant intestinal microbiota (please see their review in 2015 in Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism for more details). Related work from Fredrik’s lab on metformin-microbioa interactions in treatment-naïve T2D individuals by collaborating with Prof. José Manuel Fernàndez-Real from University of Girona has been published in Nature Medicine in 2017; collaborating work with Prof. Jan Borén from University of Gothenburgon on interactions between microbiota and low-carbs diet in subjects with NAFLD has been published in Cell Metabolism in 2018. He is now exploring the microbial shifts from prediabetes to overt T2D.
