Dr. Natalia Borruel studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Navarra, obtaining her degree in 1990 and, later, the degree of Ph.D. "cum laude" in 2005 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona with the thesis "Interactions of bacteria of the flora with the intestinal immune system ". Since 1990, first as a resident and later as staff consultant, she has developed his professional career in the Department of Digestive Diseases of the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital and specifically in the Crohn-Colitis Attention Unit (UACC) since its foundation, a pioneer unit that provides continued, interactive and patient-centered care to patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In the Unit, she is responsible for the management and monitoring of patients with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis treated with biological drugs and she acts as hospitalization consultant for IBD complex patients. The main research area in which she participates since his incorporation into the Department is that of the study of the intestinal microbiota, its relationship with the immunity of the intestinal mucosa and in particular with inflammatory bowel disease and response to biological therapy Within the framework of this research, he has participated in the METAHIT international consortium, funded by the European Union, which has generated extensive knowledge on the microbiota of the human intestinal ecosystem and high-level publications. She is a member of national and international scientific societies such as the Catalan Society of Gastroenterology, the Spanish Working Group on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (GETECCU) or the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization where she regularly acts as a scientific reviewer.
